THE COUNTERFEIT CHRIST

One of Satan's greatest deceptions is not convincing people that God does not exist. In many cases he does something far more dangerous. He convinces people that they know Christ when in reality they are following a counterfeit. The devil understands that if he can keep people from the true Christ, he wins. But if he can replace the true Christ with a false one that looks close enough to the original, many people will never realize they have been deceived. That is why Paul warned the church about those who preach "another Jesus." Notice he did not say no Jesus. He said another Jesus. A different Jesus. A counterfeit Christ. One that sounds close enough to the truth to deceive those who do not know the Scriptures.

From the very beginning Satan's strategy has never changed. In the Garden of Eden his first attack was not against Eve herself but against the Word of God. His first question was, "Did God really say?" That question is the foundation of every false religion, every false doctrine, every counterfeit gospel, and every counterfeit christ.

The moment a person begins questioning, changing, adding to, or subtracting from what God has spoken, deception has already begun. Satan knows that if he can separate people from the authority of God's Word, he can lead them almost anywhere.

This is why the Bible is so important. The Bible is not simply a religious book among many religious books. It is the revelation of the living God. It is God's testimony concerning Himself.

It tells us who He is, who we are, why we are fallen, and how we may be reconciled to Him. Most importantly, it reveals the true identity of Jesus Christ. Without the Scriptures we would be left with human opinions, religious traditions, personal experiences, and cultural ideas. Every person would simply create a god that agrees with them. Every generation would invent a new version of truth. Every religion would claim authority. But God has not left us in darkness. He has given us His Word.

Think about true north. Imagine trying to navigate across an ocean without a compass. Imagine hiking through a vast wilderness without a fixed point of direction. You may feel confident. You may walk boldly. You may sincerely believe you are heading in the right direction. Yet if your compass is wrong, you are still lost. Sincerity does not determine truth. Confidence does not determine truth. Popularity does not determine truth. Truth is truth whether we believe it or not. True north works because it does not move. It remains fixed regardless of what people think about it. God's Word is our spiritual true north. It remains fixed because God Himself remains fixed.

The Bible tells us that God does not change. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Unlike man, God does not learn. He does not improve. He does not evolve. He does not discover new information. He knows the end from the beginning. Because God does not change, His truth does not change. Because God cannot lie, His Word cannot contradict itself. If God declared something true thousands of years ago, it remains true today. If God called something sin thousands of years ago, it remains sin today. The culture may change. Society may change. Governments may change. Human opinions may change. But God's truth remains exactly where it has always been because the throne of God never moves.

This is where the counterfeit christs of the world are exposed. Every false religion ultimately presents a different Jesus than the one revealed in Scripture. Islam speaks of Jesus and honors Him as a prophet, but the Jesus of Islam is not the Christ revealed in God's Word. Islam denies that Jesus is the divine Son of God. It denies that He died on the cross as the sacrifice for sin. It denies the resurrection as the foundation of salvation. Yet Scripture declares that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, was buried, and rose again the third day. Scripture declares that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Scripture records Thomas falling before the risen Christ and saying, "My Lord and my God." Both claims cannot be true. If Jesus is God manifested in the flesh, then He is not merely a prophet. If He died for sinners, then He was not spared from the cross. Truth does not contradict truth.

Many modern spiritual movements also speak positively about Jesus. They call Him enlightened. They call Him wise. They call Him a great teacher. They call Him a spiritual master. Yet they reject His claim to be the only way to God. They place Him alongside Buddha, Muhammad, gurus, mystics, philosophers, and other religious figures. They present Him as one path among many paths. Yet Jesus Himself said,

"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes unto the Father except through me."

Notice He did not say He was a way. He did not say He was one truth among many truths. He declared Himself to be the way, the truth, and the life. The world wants a Jesus who accepts every path, but the real Christ declared that He alone is the path to the Father.

Even within what is called Christianity, confusion often arises when people begin trusting traditions, institutions, religious systems, or denominational identities more than they trust the Word of God. The apostles never instructed believers to identify themselves by man-made labels.

They preached Christ. They preached the gospel. They pointed people to the Lord Jesus Himself. Paul rebuked believers when they began dividing themselves according to human leaders. Some claimed Paul. Others claimed Apollos. Others claimed Peter. Paul's response was simple: "Is Christ divided?" The answer is no. Christ is not divided. Truth is not divided. The gospel is not divided. Men divide themselves. Men create systems. Men create institutions. Men create traditions. Yet salvation has always been found in Christ alone.

One of the greatest dangers facing the modern world is the cultural Jesus. This Jesus is loved by almost everyone because he never confronts sin. He never speaks about judgment. He never warns about hell. He never calls people to repentance. He simply exists to affirm people exactly as they are. He tells everyone they are fine. He tells everyone they are accepted. He tells everyone they can continue living however they choose. Yet this Jesus does not exist in Scripture. The real Christ preached repentance from the very beginning of His ministry. He warned of judgment. He warned of hell. He confronted religious hypocrisy. He overturned tables in the temple. He exposed false teachers. He declared that the road to destruction was broad and the road to life was narrow. The Jesus of modern culture bears little resemblance to the Christ revealed in God's Word.

Another counterfeit christ is the prosperity christ. This version of Jesus exists primarily to make people wealthy, healthy, successful, and comfortable. His message revolves around earthly gain. Yet the real Christ warned His followers that they would face suffering. He told them to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him. He promised persecution. He promised trials. He promised that the world would hate them because it hated Him first. The biblical Christ was rejected, mocked, beaten, and crucified. A Jesus whose primary mission is earthly comfort is not the Christ of Scripture.

The reason these counterfeits continue to deceive millions is because many people spend more time listening to teachers than studying God's Word for themselves. They know what their favorite preacher says. They know what social media says. They know what their tradition says. They know what their denomination says. But they do not know what Scripture says. As a result they are easily carried away by every new teaching that appears. They follow charismatic personalities instead of the Good Shepherd.

The answer is not to become an expert in every false religion. The answer is to know the real Christ. Counterfeit experts study genuine currency so thoroughly that fake bills become obvious. Likewise, believers must know the Christ revealed in Scripture so thoroughly that every counterfeit becomes obvious. The more you know the real Christ, the easier it becomes to recognize a fake. The more you study God's Word, the harder it becomes for deception to take root.

The real Christ is not hidden. He is revealed plainly in Scripture. He is the eternal Son of God. He is the Creator who became flesh. He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He is the One who died for sinners and rose from the grave. He is seated at the right hand of the Father. He is coming again to judge the living and the dead. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He does not change because God does not change.

The question facing every person is not whether they believe in a Jesus. The question is whether they believe in the Jesus revealed by God Himself. Do they trust the Christ of Scripture, or have they embraced a christ created by religion, tradition, culture, philosophy, or human imagination? Because on the day of judgment every counterfeit will be exposed. Every false gospel will be silenced. Every false religion will fall. Every man-made system will be brought to nothing. Only one throne will remain standing. The throne of the Lord Jesus Christ.

When that day comes, the only safe place to stand will be upon the unchanging, eternal, infallible Word of God. The Bible remains our true north. It cannot be revised. It cannot be improved. It cannot be contradicted. It cannot fail because its Author cannot fail. The world may drift. Religions may drift. Traditions may drift. Cultures may drift. But the Word of our God stands forever. And those who anchor themselves to the Christ revealed in that Word will never be led astray by the counterfeit.
