“Let Go of the Wheel – God’s Got This!”

Good morning, church! Or good afternoon, depending on when you're tuning in. Today, we’re talking about worry—that thing we all do even though Jesus literally told us not to do it.

Now, I know some of you are professional worriers. If worrying was an Olympic sport, you’d have gold medals hanging in your living room. You worry about your bills, your health, your job, what people think of you, whether your dog is happy, whether Chick-fil-A is open (don’t worry, they’re closed on Sundays—just like last week).

But guess what? Worrying doesn’t change anything! It doesn’t pay the bills, heal your body, or make your boss magically give you a raise. All it does is steal your peace and make you feel like you’re carrying the weight of the world.

Well, I have some good news for you today: God never intended for you to carry that weight. In fact, He specifically told you not to!

Jesus Said, “Stop Stressing!” (Okay, Not in Those Exact Words)

Let’s go straight to Scripture. Jesus, being the amazing teacher He is, tackled the issue of worry head-on in Matthew 6:25-27:

“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to Him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?”

Now, I love this because Jesus is basically saying, “Y’all ever seen a stressed-out pigeon?”

Nope! Birds aren’t out here having panic attacks over whether they’ll find their next worm. They just trust that God’s got them covered. And if He takes care of the birds, how much more will He take care of you?

Worrying Is Like Trying to Drive Without Gas

Imagine you get in your car, turn the key, and see that your gas tank is empty. Instead of filling it up, you just sit there, gripping the wheel, panicking, and hoping the car magically moves.

That’s what worrying is like. You’re holding on for dear life, stressing over things you can’t control, instead of letting God fill your tank with faith, peace, and trust in Him.

Here’s a better idea: get out of the driver’s seat and let God take the wheel. (And no, you don’t need to grab it back like a nervous passenger every five minutes!)

Proverbs 3:5-6 says:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.”

Translation? Relax. God’s got the GPS. You just need to trust Him and enjoy the ride.

Worry Is a Waste of Energy

Worry is like running on a treadmill—you’re exhausted, but you haven’t actually gone anywhere.

Jesus asks a simple but powerful question in Matthew 6:27:

“Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?”

Let’s do the math real quick:

  • Worrying about money = doesn’t make more money.

  • Worrying about your health = doesn’t make you healthier.

  • Worrying about the future = doesn’t make it any easier.

It just makes you miserable in the process.

Instead of using your energy to worry, use it to pray, trust, and take action where you can.

Philippians 4:6-7 says:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

That’s a promise! If you hand your worries over to God, He trades them in for peace. That’s a pretty great deal if you ask me.

God Already Knows How Your Story Ends

Here’s why you don’t need to worry: God already knows how everything turns out.

Picture this: You’re watching a movie you’ve already seen. You know the hero wins, the bad guy loses, and everything turns out okay.

Well, God has already seen the whole movie of your life! He knows how it ends. And guess what? He’s not worried.

Jeremiah 29:11 says:

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope.”

God has a good plan for your life. Even when things don’t make sense, even when you feel lost, He’s working behind the scenes, making sure everything falls into place.

How to Actually Stop Worrying (Because Let’s Be Real, It’s Hard)

Okay, I hear you. “That’s all great, but how do I actually stop worrying?” Here are some practical steps:

Step 1: Give Your Worries to God—For Real This Time

1 Peter 5:7 says:

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

Think of it like this: if you had a personal assistant who said, “I’ll handle all your bills, emails, and errands,” would you still stress over them? No! You’d let them do their job.

Well, God’s basically saying, “Hand your problems to Me, and stop snatching them back!”

Step 2: Replace Worry with Worship

Worry and worship can’t exist in the same space. When you feel stress creeping in, put on some worship music, pray, or read the Bible. Shift your focus from your problem to your Problem-Solver.

Step 3: Trust One Day at a Time

Matthew 6:34 says:

“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”

Translation? Stay in today. God’s already in your tomorrow, so you don’t have to stress about it.

A Little Humor to Wrap It Up

Look, I know letting go of worry isn’t easy. Some of us have been worrying since birth. You probably came out of the womb like, “Is this hospital covered by insurance?” But here’s the truth:

  • God is in control.

  • God loves you.

  • God’s got a plan.

So do yourself a favor—take a deep breath, let go of the worry, and enjoy the peace that comes from knowing your Heavenly Father is in charge.

Conclusion: Drop the Worry, Pick Up the Faith

If you’ve been carrying worry like a heavy backpack, today is the day to drop it at God’s feet.

Let’s pray

“Father, I surrender my worries to You. I know You love me, and I trust that You have a plan. Help me to rest in Your peace and walk in faith. Thank You for being in control. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Now go out there, live worry-free, and let God take the wheel. Just don’t be a backseat driver!
