Keep Your Focus on Your Destination – Heaven

Updated: Dec 9, 2024

Good morning, everyone! How many of you have ever been on a road trip? Oh yeah, road trips are fun. Well, at least in theory, right? You start all excited, snacks packed, tunes ready to go, and then about halfway through you realize… you’re kind of lost. Maybe the GPS takes you down some weird side road, or you took a wrong turn and suddenly you're in a place you definitely didn't plan to be. Or worse yet – you get distracted by the scenery, the fast food signs, or the constant battle over what radio station to play – and now you’re 20 miles off course. Sound familiar?

Well, life can sometimes feel the same way. We all have a destination – Heaven – but so often we get distracted by everything happening along the way. We veer off course, lose focus, and end up wasting time on things that don’t really matter in the long run.

Today, I want to talk to you about keeping your eyes on the prize – Heaven – and how to stay focused on that ultimate destination.

Your Destination is Heaven – Don’t Lose Sight!

First things first – let's talk about the destination. The Bible is crystal clear: if you're a follower of Jesus, your final destination is Heaven. Not a metaphorical place, not some far-off fantasy, but a real, eternal place where you will be in the presence of God forever. And it’s pretty awesome, guys. It’s the place where there’s no more sickness, no more pain, and no more 3 a.m. existential crises. Sounds good, right?

In Philippians 3:14, Paul says:

“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Paul knew what his destination was, and he kept his focus on it. He didn’t get sidetracked by detours, distractions, or anything this world had to offer. His eyes were set on the prize – Heaven. And that’s what we need to do too. We can’t afford to get lost in the “roadside attractions” of life, like fame, fortune, or social media validation. We have a bigger, better, and eternal goal.

How to Stay on Track? Prioritize God.

Now, how do we actually keep our focus on Heaven? The answer is simple: Prioritize God in everything. Just like you can’t get to your road trip destination if you don’t know which way you’re going, you can’t get to Heaven if you don’t know the path and follow it.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:33:

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

In other words, when you prioritize God’s will, His purpose, and His kingdom above everything else, He will guide you, provide for you, and help you stay on the right path. It’s like having a GPS system for life – the closer you are to God, the more clearly you’ll see the road ahead.

Let’s be real – it’s easy to get distracted. Work deadlines, relationships, and the constant pull of Netflix can easily throw us off track. But when we stay rooted in God's Word, prayer, and the support of other believers, we’re reminded of the ultimate goal: Heaven.

Life is Full of Distractions – Don’t Get Sidetracked!

Life is full of detours and distractions. Maybe you’re tempted to take the scenic route of sin, or you get too caught up in what everyone else is doing. But let’s remember what Jesus said in Luke 9:62:

“No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

Imagine you’re driving your car, heading toward that beautiful beach resort, but every time you see something shiny on the side of the road, you take a detour. Pretty soon, you’re lost in the middle of nowhere, wondering where all the good beach towels went. And in life, those distractions can be just as dangerous.

The enemy loves to distract us – whether it’s through stress, entertainment, or personal desires. It’s like he’s trying to get us to take all these "off-ramps" so we forget where we’re going. But remember, you’ve got to keep your foot on the pedal and your eyes ahead – straight on the prize of Heaven.

Obstacles Will Come, But Keep Going!

Now, there will be roadblocks. You may hit some traffic, get stuck in a storm, or even have a flat tire on your spiritual journey. It’s not always going to be easy. But remember, the destination is worth it. In Romans 8:18, Paul reminds us:

“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”

Whatever struggles you’re facing today – whether it’s family issues, health problems, or just the weight of life – keep your eyes on the prize. Those things don’t compare to the joy and peace we’ll experience when we finally reach Heaven. Trust that the struggles you face now are temporary, but your eternal home with God is forever.

Don’t Rush the Journey – Enjoy the Ride!

Okay, I know what you’re thinking: “I just want to get to Heaven already! I’m ready to be done with all this earthly stuff!” I get it. But guess what? The journey itself is important.

God wants to use the time you have on Earth to shape you, grow you, and help you become more like Him. So don’t rush through life just trying to get to the finish line. Instead, enjoy the ride. Serve others. Love your family. Share the gospel. All of these things help you stay focused on the ultimate goal and make your time on this earth meaningful.

In James 1:2-4, we read:

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

That’s right, people – joy in the journey! You’re not just heading to Heaven; you’re becoming the person God designed you to be along the way. So embrace the bumps in the road, the speed bumps, and even the detours. God is using it all to prepare you for something better.

Conclusion: Heaven is the Goal – Stay Focused!

So, church, as we continue this journey of life, let’s not get distracted by the things that try to pull us off course. Let’s keep our eyes on the prize: Heaven. Remember to prioritize God in all things, avoid the detours of sin and distraction, and embrace the process of becoming more like Him every day.

You’ve got a clear destination. Now, keep your eyes on the road ahead and stay faithful in your journey. Heaven is waiting, and you’re well on your way!

Amen.
