Elect or Follower? The Test That Really Matters

We live in a world full of religion, programs, rituals, and traditions. People go to church every Sunday, give to every ministry, attend every “spiritual” event, and yet many hearts remain far from God. Outward activity does not equal salvation. Today, we’re going to talk about the difference between being truly elect and merely being a follower, and how you can test yourself in a simple but life-changing way.
1. The Elect vs. Followers
The Bible makes a clear distinction between those chosen by God—the elect—and those who only appear devoted. The elect are predestined, called, and drawn to God.
Romans 8:29 says, “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son,” and Ephesians 1:4-5 says, “In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ.”
Followers, however, may attend church, pray, give, and even speak Bible verses—but their hearts are not fully surrendered. Jesus warned in Matthew 7:22-23: “Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord… Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you.’” Outward activity is not proof of election.
2. Merited vs. Unmerited Favor
A major difference is that the elect rely on unmerited favor. They understand salvation is a gift of God, not something they can earn through works, rituals, or traditions.
Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Followers often try to earn favor through programs, deliverance ministries, or rituals. They may think that attending certain services, performing ceremonies, or following denominational rules guarantees security. But God is not impressed with human inventions. The elect rely solely on Christ’s grace, not on outward actions.
3. Taking God’s Word at Face Value
The elect take God’s Word as it is written. They do not twist, add to, interpret, or make concessions to suit themselves. God’s Word is simple. Jesus said,
“If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15). That’s it.
Followers often rationalize, reinterpret, or ignore Scripture. They think, “This doesn’t apply to me,” or “I’ll soften this command for my circumstances.” They lean on traditions, denominational rules, or programs—like deliverance ministries, rituals, or repetitive prayers—believing these will save or protect them. But faith is in the Word, not in human inventions.
Example: A follower may attend a weekly deliverance session and feel spiritual because of the ceremony, but if they live in disobedience and ignore God’s Word the rest of the week, their faith is hollow. The elect obey even when no one is watching, even when it’s difficult, and even when society contradicts God’s commands.
4. The Elect Never Fall, Followers Can and Do
The elect are secure in Christ. Their salvation is rooted in God’s unmerited favor, not in works or rituals.
Romans 8:38-39 says nothing can separate them from the love of God. They may stumble, but they repent and continue in faith.
Followers, however, rely on human effort or ritual. When trials, temptation, or persecution come, their faith can collapse. Outward acts cannot save. Followers are always at risk because their trust is in themselves or in man-made systems.
5. Practical Daily Applications
How do you live as the elect in today’s world? Here are some practical steps:
Obey God’s Word daily. Read it, believe it, and apply it. Don’t pick and choose. If the Bible says it, obey it.
Reject empty rituals. Ceremonies, programs, and traditions cannot save you. Use them wisely for growth, but never rely on them for grace.
Examine your heart. Ask: “Do I trust God’s Word fully, or am I bending it to suit myself?”
Live faithfully in the small things. Speak truth, forgive, serve, and love when it’s inconvenient. These small acts reveal whether you are elect.
Rely entirely on Christ’s unmerited favor. Stop trying to earn God’s approval. Stop substituting man-made programs for true obedience. Salvation is God’s gift, not a reward for effort.
Modern Examples:
Elect: A person tells the truth at work, even when lying would benefit them, because God’s Word says it is right.
Follower: Someone prays for hours in ritual but lies, cheats, or gossips during the week, thinking the ritual “covers” them.
Elect: Forgives a friend who hurt them, even though it is hard.
Follower: Forgives only when recognition or social approval is guaranteed.
6. The Test of Election
Ask yourself:
Do I take God’s Word fully as truth, without adding, subtracting, or reinterpreting?
Do I obey God even when it is difficult or inconvenient?
Do I rely on unmerited favor, trusting Christ alone, or on rituals, traditions, or human rules?
Answer honestly. If yes, you are elect. If no, you are following human substitutes.
Conclusion
God’s call is simple but profound: build your life on His Word, trust His grace, and obey fully. Reject empty traditions, rituals, or human inventions that promise holiness but cannot deliver it. Those who do this are the elect—secure, chosen, and sustained by unmerited favor. Those who do not are followers, always at risk of falling.
The world may try to confuse you with gimmicks, rituals, or denominational rules. Stand firm. Live in obedience. Trust God’s Word. Walk in unmerited favor. The elect never fall; the followers can and do.
