Father God, we come before You today with hearts full of gratitude and anticipation. We know You have great plans for each one of us, and we’re here to listen, to learn, and to surrender. Open our eyes, open our hearts, and help us recognize the blessings You’ve prepared for us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Good morning, everyone! Have you ever felt like you’re just waiting on a blessing from God, but it feels like it’s taking FOREVER to come? You pray, you hope, and you wait. But sometimes, it seems like you’re stuck in a holding pattern, and you can’t move forward.
Today, we’re going to talk about how we can delay God's blessings in our lives, and the reasons why we end up taking a 40-year detour on a journey that could have been a lot shorter. We’re going to look at the Israelites, who took 40 YEARS to travel a journey that should have taken about 11 days. And trust me, there’s a lot we can learn from their mistakes! So let’s dive in.
The Israelites Took 40 Years to Travel 11 Days
If you’ve read the Old Testament, you know the story of the Israelites escaping Egypt. They were in bondage for hundreds of years, and when God finally brought them out, He had big plans for them: a land flowing with milk and honey—basically the land of all-you-can-eat pizza, with no calories! (Okay, maybe not pizza, but you get the point.)
But instead of walking right into the promised land, they ended up wandering around in the wilderness for 40 years. A journey that should have taken just 11 days took them 40 years. 40 years! That’s longer than some of us have been alive! Now, if you’re like me, you’re probably wondering, “How in the world did that happen?”
Here’s the thing: It wasn’t because God wasn’t faithful. It wasn’t because God had forgotten His promises. It was because the Israelites kept delaying their blessings. They kept getting in their own way. They kept messing up, complaining, rebelling, and holding on to the past.
What Holds Us Back? Complaints, Rebellion, and Dwelling on the Past
So, what’s the deal with the Israelites? Why did they take 40 years to make an 11-day trip? Well, let’s look at a few things that held them back:
Complaints: The Israelites spent a lot of time complaining. A LOT. You’d think after being slaves for 400 years, they would be grateful for the freedom they had, right? But instead, they were constantly whining about the food, the heat, the leadership, and even the fact that they had to walk instead of riding in air-conditioned chariots. Sound familiar? Ever find yourself complaining about things that really aren’t that bad?
Rebellion Against God’s Will: Every time things didn’t go their way, the Israelites rebelled. God would give them instructions, and they’d either ignore them or flat-out disobey. For example, when they reached the edge of the promised land, God told them to go in and take the land. But they were too scared of the giants living there, and they doubted God’s promise. They chose fear over faith, and that cost them big time.
Dwelling on the Past: One of the biggest barriers the Israelites faced was their obsession with the past. They kept saying, “Back in Egypt, we had food and water. We had a life!” Seriously? They had slavery, but they kept focusing on what was behind them instead of what God had ahead of them. Their nostalgia for Egypt kept them from moving forward into the blessing. Sometimes, we do the same thing—looking back at our old lives and saying, “It wasn’t so bad back then.” But what’s behind us is not where God wants us to stay. God has greater things ahead for us, and we can’t live in the past and the future at the same time.
Unforgiveness Delays Blessings
Another big thing that can delay our blessings is unforgiveness. The Israelites had a tendency to harbor bitterness against one another. Every time something went wrong, they’d turn on Moses or each other. Ever done that? Maybe someone hurt you, and you hold on to that bitterness, nursing it like a pet.
But the truth is, unforgiveness blocks God’s blessings. When we hold on to anger or resentment, it’s like putting a padlock on our own blessing. God says, “If you forgive, I’ll forgive you.” But if you’re holding grudges, it’s like telling God, “No, I’m going to do things my way.” And let me tell you—your way doesn’t work nearly as well as God’s way!
Every Day You Breathe is a Day for Blessings
Now, here’s the good news—God isn’t done with you yet. Every day that you have breath in your lungs is another day that God is waiting to pour out His blessings on you. You’re not too far gone, and it’s never too late for a fresh start. You might have made mistakes, but today is a brand-new day.
If you’re still here today, it’s because God has something incredible ahead for you. Think about that. He’s just waiting for you to step out in faith. He’s waiting for you to forgive, to stop complaining, to stop focusing on the past, and to trust His plan. You’re one step away from your breakthrough. You’re one decision away from walking into the promised land.
Trust in God’s Timing and Surrender to His Will
Here’s where we need to get real. Sometimes, we delay our own blessings because we don’t trust God’s timing. We want things to happen on our schedule, but God’s timing is always better than ours. If we’re always rushing ahead, trying to make things happen in our own strength, we can end up making decisions that lead to delays and detours.
If you want to speed up the process of receiving your blessings, it’s simple: Surrender to God’s will. Let Him take the lead. Trust that He knows what’s best for you and that He is working behind the scenes, even when you can’t see it. His timing is always perfect. You don’t have to figure it out—just trust and obey.
Step Into Your Blessings Today
Church, I want you to understand this: You don’t have to take the 40-year detour. You don’t have to spend decades wandering in the wilderness, waiting for blessings that are already on their way. God’s blessings are waiting for you. He’s ready to take you into the land He has promised you. But the question is: Will you move forward?
Will you stop complaining? Will you stop looking back? Will you forgive? Will you trust that God has a plan for your future that’s far greater than anything you’ve left behind?
Today is the day to start moving forward. Step into the blessing, church. Trust God, surrender your life to Him, and watch how He begins to pour out His favor.
Let’s pray.
Father, we thank You for Your patience and Your goodness. We know that we’ve delayed our blessings by complaining, holding on to the past, and not trusting in Your plan. Today, we surrender all that to You. We choose to move forward in faith, to forgive, to trust, and to step into the blessing You have for us. Thank You that every day is a day You’re waiting to bring us closer to the promise. We trust Your timing, God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Go ahead and step forward, church. The blessing is waiting.
