Breaking the Chains – Overcoming the Obstacles of Our Generation

Good morning, Church! Let’s be real—our generation has some serious mountains to climb. I’m not talking about literal mountains (though hiking is great); I’m talking about the struggles and roadblocks that keep us from stepping into the fullness of what God has for us.
Now, you might be thinking, “Wait a minute, Pastor—what does student debt or political drama have to do with the Bible?” Stick with me. I promise, the Word of God has something to say about every area of life.
Today, let’s unpack three big obstacles holding our generation back and how we, as followers of Christ, can break free and rise up.
Economic Inequality – The Chains of Scarcity
Let’s be honest—some of us feel like we were born into a financial escape room. Student loans? Check. Rent that feels like a second mortgage? Double check. The weight of economic inequality can make it feel like we’re running a race while dragging a 50-pound bag of bricks.
But here’s the deal—God’s kingdom doesn’t operate on scarcity. Philippians 4:19 says:
“And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
Notice it doesn’t say “according to your paycheck” or “if the job market is good.” It says according to His riches.
Church, God isn’t broke! He owns everything. And while this doesn’t mean we magically get out of debt overnight, it shifts our mindset from “I’ll never have enough” to “God is my provider.”
Our job? Be faithful. Steward what He’s given us. Trust Him in the lean seasons. And most importantly—look out for one another. Acts 2:44-45 talks about the early Church sharing what they had so no one was in need. Imagine if we did that more often!
Political Polarization – The Wall That Divides
Oh boy…you knew this one was coming. Can we all agree that political polarization has made Thanksgiving dinners a little more awkward?
Here’s the problem—division weakens us. The more we fight each other, the less energy we have to fight the real battles—poverty, injustice, and spiritual brokenness. Jesus addressed this head-on. In Mark 3:25, He said:
“If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.”
Guess what? That applies to nations, families, and churches too.
Look, you don’t have to agree with everyone. (Even the disciples didn’t always see eye to eye.) But unity doesn’t mean uniformity. It means loving each other despite our differences.
Romans 12:18 says:
“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”
Translation: Be the peacemaker. Don’t be the one adding gasoline to the fire.
Our generation needs bridge-builders, not wall-constructors. Let’s be the people who speak truth with grace, who listen more than we argue, and who remember that our ultimate allegiance is to Christ, not a political party.
Lack of Access to Education – The Barrier to Growth
Education can open doors, but for many, those doors feel bolted shut. Whether it’s cost, systemic barriers, or lack of opportunity, many are left feeling stuck. But here’s the truth—God equips those He calls. Proverbs 4:7 says:
“The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.”
Now, that doesn’t mean you need a fancy degree to make an impact. Moses didn’t have a theology degree, and David didn’t go to leadership school. But what did they do? They sought wisdom from God.
Here’s what I know—education isn’t just found in classrooms. It’s found in Scripture, mentorship, life experiences, and even failures. James 1:5 tells us:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
God’s classroom is always open. He’s ready to teach, lead, and equip us—we just have to show up. And Church, if we’ve been blessed with education, let’s share it. Mentor someone. Teach a skill. Knowledge grows when it’s passed on.
So…What’s the Game Plan?
Here’s the good news—we aren’t powerless.
Facing financial struggles? Lean on God and help those around you.
Tired of the political circus? Be a voice of peace and unity.
Want to grow but lack resources? Ask God for wisdom and seek out ways to learn in every season.
Our generation has the potential to shake the world—but only if we break free from the chains holding us down. Let’s remember, we serve a God who breaks chains.
Isaiah 58:6 says:
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?”
God is still in the chain-breaking business. And guess what? He wants to use us to do it.
Closing Prayer:
Father, thank You for calling us to greater things. We acknowledge the obstacles in front of us, but we also recognize that You are greater than every limitation we face. Break the chains of division, financial struggle, and lack. Equip us to be people who lift others, who build unity, and who reflect Your love in all we do. May we rise as a generation that pursues justice, peace, and wisdom—walking boldly in the calling You have for us. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Go out this week with your head held high—not because the obstacles are gone, but because God walks with you through them.
